Healthcare IT Labor Market Trends

April 20, 2021

The past 13+ months have shown a multitude of shifts and changes across the healthcare industry as a whole and healthcare IT professional services are not immune. As the Covid-19 pandemic pulled focus from hospital’s IT projects to managing care for patients of the virus, testing, and vaccine roll-out, we saw a significant change in the HIT labor market. Read on to learn more about what Superlanet has learned about the ever-changing landscape of the HIT consulting market and what this means for our clients.

As a firm that values integrity and delivering the best value services to our clients, Superlanet continually works to provide HIT professional services that are reflective of the current market. Our executive, account management, marketing, and recruitment teams consistently aggregate data on the current labor market to ensure we are presenting staffing rates that are in line with the current state of the market.

Throughout 2020 and early 2021 our clients have enjoyed lower staffing rates due to shifts in the market and IT consultant demand. As hospitals and healthcare systems focused on clinical initiatives related to Covid-19 care, testing, and vaccination, IT project budgets decreased and the demand for IT consultants significantly lowered as well. Due to this decrease in demand, IT consultant pay rates saw a notable reduction. On average, healthcare IT consultant rates saw an 20% decrease from 2019 to 2020, with a peak decrease of 31% during the late summer of 2020. Superlanet passed these savings benefits on to our clients, providing them the same high-quality consultants at rates reflective of the current market.

Now at the beginning of the second quarter of 2021, as healthcare organizations are ramping up their IT projects again, we are seeing the demand for HIT consultants begin to increase again. As we have been closely tracking the market, we find it important to educate our partners and the greater HIT professional services industry on the current environment of HIT labor.
